Open VISIONS Forum Espresso: Wendell Wallach - "Hype v. Reality: Navigating the Future of AI Ethics and Governance."

Presented in collaboration with the Fredrickson Family Innovation Lab

The embedding of AI in nearly every facet of contemporary life offers wide-ranging benefits along with a plethora of risks and undesired societal consequences. Innovative yet flawed technologies such as large language models (e.g., ChatGPT) become integrated into the fabric of daily life long before we can put in place necessary ethical/legal safeguards. To complicate matters, discerning which challenges require immediate attention is often obscured by hype and fearmongering. What steps must be taken to navigate the uncertainties posed by AI and other emerging technologies?

Wendell Wallach has an international reputation as an expert on the ethics and governance of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, and biotechnologies. He is Carnegie/Uehiro Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs (CCEIA) where he co-directs the AI and Equality Initiative. He is also senior advisor to The Hastings Center and a scholar at the Yale University Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics where he chaired Technology and Ethics studies for eleven years. Wallach's latest book, a primer on emerging technologies, is entitled, A Dangerous Master: How to Keep Technology from Slipping Beyond Our Control and he co-authored (with Colin Allen) Moral Machines: Teaching Robots Right From Wrong.
