Synopsis:

Love and Death in Montmartre is a piercing documentary exploring the life and work of Taiwanese novelist Qiu Miaojin. An open lesbian, Qiu took her life in Paris in 1995 at the age of 26. Celebrated for her “thrillingly transgressive” work (NYT), Qiu posthumously emerged as a global Chinese queer icon and an international literary discovery. Blending fiction, performance art, and interviews with Qiu’s friends, associates, and advocates — including American poet Eileen Myles, novelist Ocean Wong, and France’s eminent feminist philosopher Hélène Cixous— Love and Death in Montmartre is a beautiful tribute to this self-exiled queer writer whose ardent assertion of her right to love and her untimely death accelerated Taiwan’s LGBTQ movement, which culminated in the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2019, the first in Asia.
