Join us for a screening of Farming While Black, a feature-length documentary that examines the history of Black farmers in the United States and the new generation reclaiming their agricultural heritage.

The film follows Leah Penniman, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York, as she draws on African agrarian traditions to heal communities and the planet. Inspired by urban farming pioneer Karen Washington and organizer Blain Snipstal, Penniman leads a movement for land justice and sustainable agriculture.

In 1910, Black farmers owned 14% of American farmland—a number that has since dropped below 2% due to systemic racism and dispossession. Farming While Black tells the stories of those working to restore this legacy and build a more just food system.

Following the screening, join us for a panel discussion featuring: Danielle Peláez, Farm Education Manager, Soul Fire Farm and Mark Decena, Filmmaker and Founder, Kontent Films.

The event is sponsored by the Humanities Institute, Environmental Studies Program, and the Center for Social Impact.
