Cardinal Robert McElroy is the sixth bishop and the first cardinal of the Diocese of San Diego. The most recent American to be elevated, he was appointed to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis on May 29, 2022. With a passion for the environment and for those on the margins of the Church, he is a steadfast proponent of the pope’s synodal process, with its emphasis on listening to—and empowering—the diverse voices of God’s people.
